Twelve teams vied on 9th June to wrest the Doubles title from Leo and Annette. Everyone played three games during the morning session, the results determining whether they would play for Gold or Silver in the afternoon.
Brett Rodwell and Peter Aldersey were the only pair emerging from the morning unbeaten and their ‘reward’ was a Gold semi final tie with hugely experienced pair Tony Giordiano and Clifton Gonsalves which they did well to win. At the other end of the draw, Colin Harrison and Sue Godwin unseated current champions Leo and Annette Black. In an enthralling Gold final Sue pointed her boules onto the jacktime and again and when necessary Colin shot their opponents’ boule out of the frame. They were simply too strong for Peter and Brett and took their first trophy at the Club in fine style.
The Club were impressed by the performance of Brett Rodwell, who has only been playing for a couple of months – a young man showing great potential.
In the semis of the Silver event Mike Coniam and Roger Haynes, who’d suffered a torrid morning session, played Jennie Pudney and Geoff Black and emerged worthy winners. In the other half of the draw, husband and wife pair Mick and Pat Roberts overcame Steve White and J-P Elena to secure their place in the final. Another tightly fought contest saw Mike and Roger’s confidence grow and they took the Silver title with aplomb.
